Hungary has seen a steady rise in average gross wages in recent years, with a notable increase of 17.5% from 2021 to 2022. The Central Statistics Office has released data on the highest gross wage jobs in the country, covering a range of industries and education levels.
Non-degree jobs with high salaries
Surprisingly, some of the highest-paying jobs in the country don't require a university degree. Air traffic controllers, for example, earn an average of HUF 2.3 million per month, making it the highest-grossing profession in Hungary. Despite not requiring a higher education degree, the profession requires passing a difficult and arduous test to qualify.
Politicians also make the list, with members of parliament, government and municipal representatives earning an average of HUF 1.8 million per month. While many politicians hold a degree in law or economics, it is not a requirement by law for these positions.
Degree-dependent jobs with high salaries
Other top-paying jobs do require a university degree, but not necessarily in a specific field. For example, stockbrokers earn an average of HUF 1.3 million per month and usually possess a degree in economics or a similar field, as well as passing a brokerage exam.
Meanwhile, software developers earn just over HUF 1 million per month on average, often requiring a computer-related degree or completion of a short course to enter the industry.
Competitive advantage of having a degree
While some high-paying jobs don't require a degree, having one can provide a competitive edge in the job market. Many employers prefer to hire candidates with a university degree or specific education in their field of work. Additionally, the practical experience and acquired knowledge during university studies can also give graduates an advantage.
