The Hungarian Pentecostal Church will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in the coming years. This milestone will be commemorated with a series of events and publications to honor the journey of faith and outreach of the church in Budapest.
The anniversary will begin with a commemoration in Darány, Somogy County, where the first Pentecostal prayer house in Hungary was opened in 1923. In the spring of 2024, a National Pentecostal Conference will be held to strengthen Pentecostal identity, explore its roots, and set directions for the future. The celebrations will culminate in a major evangelization event in 2028, marking the centenary of the church's official foundation. Additionally, several publications, including a book on the centenary of Pentecostalism, will be produced to mark this special occasion.
The celebrations are part of a renewal process initiated by the new presidency elected in the spring. Their aim is to focus on empowering the next generation and engage with society through their institutions. The founding pioneers of the Pentecostal movement emigrated to the U.S. and returned home to Hungary with a strong sense of mission to reach out to people.
The first Pentecostal prayer house was built in 1923 in Darány, Somogy County, by József Szalai and his wife. This marked the beginning of the establishment of prayer groups and congregations in various locations such as Hajdúhadháza, Csetény, Gyönkö, Bakonycsernye, and Kispest. The Pentecostal congregations held their first joint conference in 1926 and officially founded the Association of Assemblies of God, the legal predecessor of the Hungarian Pentecostal Church, in 1928.
The Hungarian Pentecostal Church's centenary celebrations are a testament to their journey of faith and outreach in Budapest.
