Navigating any healthcare system can be challenging, especially if you're unfamiliar with its specific processes. If you need to get a prescription in Hungary, it's pretty straightforward. You'll need to visit a doctor who will evaluate your condition and write you a prescription if necessary. However, the process doesn't end there. Here we will dig deeper into what happens next.
In Hungary, to get a prescription, you first need to make an appointment with a medical practitioner. The doctor is responsible for conducting a thorough checkup based on your current condition. Medical histories play a crucial role and will be considered before prescribing any medication. If you're a tourist, it's advisable to opt for private clinics where English-speaking doctors are readily available.
Prescriptions in Hungary are typically classified into two types: ordinary and urgent. Ordinary prescriptions have a validity period of 30 days, while an urgent prescription should be served by the pharmacy within two days. The doctor will make this classification based on the severity of your condition.
Once your doctor writes a prescription, it's registered electronically. Instead of handing over a paper prescription, the doctor will give you a "prescription ID number" (PIN number). Along with your TAJ number (social security number), this PIN number is used in any pharmacy to get your medication. It is crucial to keep this number safely as it's required to purchase your prescribed medicine.
After receiving your prescription PIN, the next step is visiting a pharmacy. In Hungary, medicines are generally dispensed by pharmacies (Gyógyszertár or Patika). Most pharmacies in Hungary remain open from 8 am to 6 pm on weekdays, with an on-call system at night and during weekends. Present your prescription PIN and TAJ number to the pharmacist, who will dispense the appropriate medication.
The cost of prescribed medicines in Hungary is partly covered by the National Health Insurance Fund (OEP). The rate of subsidy usually ranges between 25% and 100%. However, prices of medication depend on the type of illness, effectiveness of the medication, and the type of the product.
Remember, the validity of prescriptions in Hungary differs based on whether they are ordinary or urgent. For ordinary prescriptions, it's valid for 30 days from the day it's prescribed, and for urgent prescriptions, the validity is for two days.
Some chronic conditions necessitate regular medication. In this case, your doctor might prescribe a repeat prescription, allowing you to get a supply of medication for a specific period without going back to the doctor every time.
Navigating healthcare systems can be frustrating and often confusing. However, sourcing a prescription in Hungary is simplified thanks to the use of E-prescriptions. Always remember to consult with a professional who can fully evaluate your health condition before prescribing medication, and make sure to use your prescription responsibly.
